Converting building to youth center

Editor:

This article will be directed to the people of Winnemucca to include the city council about the proposed converting of the city gym to a youth center.

I moved to Humboldt County in August of 1993 and have worked out off and on in the city gym since moving here. I see several problems with this proposal.

Number one is if it is manned by volunteers and NOT employees of the City of Winnemucca, they technically do NOT have the authority to tell someone to leave if they become disruptive.

Number two, who is going to pay for the insurance when someone is hurt?

Number three, has anyone talked to the mines or has anyone thought about expanding the building toward the swimming pool? I for one would pick up a hammer and help.

Number four, whatever happened to the positions that the city used to pay to have attendants to watch the gym? There used to be paid attendants there before.

Number five, when the building is being supervised by paid city employees, vandalism does NOT happen.

Number six, I have seen with my eyes the after affects of vandalism at the city gym. Rest assured, if I saw who did it I would make a full statement to the Winnemucca Police Department and see the person brought to justice.

Number seven, the Lowry High School swim team did use the city gym for weight training.

Finally, I am for a youth center and EXPANSION of the building, all alternatives should be on the table. I was teaching up at McDermitt Combined School when the city council meeting took place; otherwise I would have brought all of these issues up at the meeting.
