Conference begins with a blast

The opening ceremonies for the 69th Annual County Fiscal Officers Association will literally start off with a bang when Skip Hammargren fires his Civil War-era cannon on Wednesday, Sept. 10 between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on the Nixon Lawn. As a safety precaution, parking will restricted on Second Street between Bridge and Melarky for a brief period.

Assessors, auditors, comptrollers, county clerks, recorders, registrars of voters, treasurers and their staff members from Nevada's 17 counties will be in town to attend the conference here inWinnemucca Sept. 9 - 11.

The cannon being fired on Wednesday morning is an 1840 12-pound Howitzer, and is the type of artillery used in Nevada during its days as a territory and during the Civil War.

The Winnemucca Masonc Lodge 19 color guard will present the flags and will be dressed in military costumes from the Civil War, World War I and World War II. The Winnemucca Civic Chorus will sing the National Athem and Jacob Schmidt, of Winnemucca, will sing "Home means Nevada."

The conference theme, "Nevada True - Silver and Blue" celebrates the 150th birthday of the Silver State. In between workshops, conference attendees will hear presentations on historic topics from JP Marden, a local historian, Undersheriff Curtiss Kull and State Archivist Jeff Kintop.

The Winnemucca Basque Club, Euskaldunak Danak Bat, will serve a Basque dinner and perform Basque dances on Wednesday evening. The conference ends with a celebration in silver and blue on Thursday evening.[[In-content Ad]]
