WINNEMUCCA - Cross your fingers, country music fans.
Local concert promoter Joe McIntyre is hoping to bring legendary singer-songwriter Merle Haggard to town on Dec. 14, and he's turning to the Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority (WCVA) for its help.
The WCVA board plans to meet at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, and according to its meeting agenda, McIntyre is scheduled to request funding for a Haggard concert.
The Dec. 14 date is currently wide open, according to the Hag's official website. He is scheduled to perform at the Golden Nugget Showroom in Las Vegas on Dec. 7-8, but no other concerts are listed beyond that time.
It's been about 25 years since a Haggard song last reached the top of the charts, but in that time, his stature and influence as an artist have only grown.
Like Johnny Cash or Hank Williams before him, Haggard writes and sings about universal truths that speak to almost everyone.
"When a Merle Haggard song plays, it can make an innocent-as-apple pie grandma understand the stark loneliness and self-loathing of a prisoner on death row; a rich kid who never wanted for any material possession get a feel for the pain of wondering where the next meal will come from; a tee-totaling pillar of the community sympathize with the poor heartbroken guy downing shots at the local bar," his official biography says.
