Community volunteers focus on Water Canyon, local school during Day of Service

WINNEMUCCA - The campgrounds in Water Canyon got a thorough working over last Saturday during the second annual "Community Day of Service."

The event, which is sponsored by the Winnemucca Ministerial Association, took place on Saturday, June 23, and area do-gooders were out in force as they gathered gloves, rakes and shovels and headed to Water Canyon where they helped clean up, prune and provide maintenance to that area's campgrounds.

A smaller group repainted the activity patterns on the Sonoma Heights Elementary School playground with equal success.

The entire group then gathered at the lowest Water Canyon campground to enjoy sloppy Joes, beans, chips, watermelon and drinks - all provided by the Winnemucca Food Bank.

Last year, during the first annual "Community Day of Service," about 75 volunteers completed an impressive list of tasks including replacing a single mother's roof, painting the entire outside of a home for a widowed mother of three, performing yard work, hauling garbage, laying thousands of feet of sod, making roof and swamp cooler repairs and cleaning up the Pioneer Cemetery located across the Humboldt River from Pioneer Park.

Winnemucca Grammar School also received a spruce-up that morning, with teachers working alongside community residents and parents to mow lawns, weed, sweep and clear debris from the school's playground.

This year, only about 30 people participated in the community service effort, but organizers say they aren't ready to give up on the concept. They feel confident that more publicity and heightened correlation between area service groups and churches will help the "Community Day of Service" become a Humboldt County tradition.

"We just want to come together as friends and neighbors and do our part to help keep Winnemucca a place we are proud to call home," said Winnemucca Ministerial Association Vice President Pastor Gayle Basten.

"When we join hands to serve, our hearts become united," she added. "I think our goal here is to simply reach out in any way that we can to do good."
