MCDERMITT - The seventh grade students at McDermitt have been building robots from the VEX Robotics Design System sponsored by University of Nevada-Reno's Extension Office/Elko Branch/Marilyn Smith.
The "robotic kit" is intended to introduce students to the world of robotics. The VEX Robotics Design System is centered around the VEX Clawbot.
Students in teams of two built the robots from the box up. Each kit came with four electric motors, four wheels, gears, and many structural accessories. Teacher Todd Holden facilitated the process as students built the robots. Students have built four robots in teams of two. The past few weeks they have been practicing for the robotics assembly they will present to the elementary in May.
One day a week, Holden is taking the students and their robots to the track field. At the field they are practicing working their robots while helping the community. They have decided to use the robots to pick up trash. Students spend time each week using the robots to help clean up the school and community.
