LOVELOCK - The Lovelock community is rallying around 2-year old Leukemia patient Louie Gutierrez by holding a walk-a-thon at the Lovelock Strip Park on Sunday, Oct. 28, to help raise money for mounting and ongoing medical cost.

"Lovelock is a small town and everyone has been touched by Louie," said Gutierrez family friend Tywanda Muse.

Muse, a soon to be published author, wrote a poem expressing her views on the fight the little Gutierrez is facing.

"He's a wonderful kid and I can't imagine if something like that would happen to my kids," Muse said with a quiver in her voice.

Gutierrez is the son of Lovelock residents Marcos and Coco Gutierrez. He will need treatments and follow-up doctor visits in Reno over the next three years. All funds raised at the Walk for Louie will go into a fund for his medical costs.

Walk organizer Valaree Olivas invites the community to come to the walk-a-thon on Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lovelock Strip Park.

"We will have Louie T-shirts for sale and food vendors and all the money goes to help Louie and his family," Olivas said.

Participants are encouraged to get sponsors for their walk, either a one-time donation or a per lap donation. Participants will be entered into a raffle to win many great prizes, Olivas said.

Anyone wishing to donate prizes for the raffle can contact Olivas at 273-0448 or donations can be sent to Olivas at 610 Reservoir Road, Lovelock, NV 89419. Additionally, anyone wishing to help Louie without attending the walk-a-thon can make a donation at their local Wells Fargo Bank into account 357513707.

The Grow-O-Ween dog show will follow the Walk for Louie.
