Community pitches in to make Fall Farm Festival a reality

Editor:

It never ceases to amaze me how the Winnemucca community can rally together in support of a special activity or someone in need.

Earlier this year, with sponsorship from the Humboldt County Chamber of Commerce, my family came up with the concept of producing a wholesome family event to teach children and their families about agriculture. As a result, the Fall Farm Festival on the Lazy P Adventure Farm was born.

From the very beginning we had businesses, adults, kids and families volunteering to help the event through its development stage. Families converged on the farm to help plant almost two acres of pumpkins for the pumpkin patch. Additionally, labor and equipment was donated to plant the five acres of corn for what is now the Winnemucca- themed corn maze - forming the basis, along with many more attractions, of our month-long festival.

As opening day approached, we realized we needed help to complete last minute details and operate the various aspects of the festival. We began to reach out to the community again for help and again they came to our rescue.

Through the coordination of volunteers by Cathy Castillo, we received help from groups like Lowry High School's Future Farmers of America organization, Leadership Club and the LDS young men's organization, along with other adults and kids.

A number of local businesses have also contributed to the festival, but there are three people that deserve special recognition for going above and beyond to help support this community event. I would like to thank Loren Hunewill, Red Sheppard, and Walt Curtis for their contribution of time, labor, equipment and materials that has resulted in a much nicer experience for those attending the festival.

We appreciate all the nice comments from those who made it out to the opening weekend, but we realize that our success is due to all the community support we have received. We are humbled by this support and thank everyone who has participated thus far.

With three weekends of the festival to go, including a flashlight maze and five nights of the haunted attraction still to come, we are hopeful that everyone will stop by and see what the community event is all about.

We hope to see you there. More information can be found at www.lazypfarm.com or by calling 775-625-1194. Volunteers, entertainers and demonstrators are still needed.

Thank you.
