Community Garden excited for Harvest Festival Bring your family, friends for food-featured Fall festival on Saturday

By Ryan Clemens

WINNEMUCCA - It's that time of year again: The seasons are changing quickly here in northern Nevada and before we let autumn fall into winter, there is still a copious amount of fun to be had by all!

The 5th annual Harvest Festival is now upon us. The festival will take place on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Winnemucca Community Garden located at 151 W. McArthur Ave. Join your Winnemucca Community Garden in celebrating all that the fall season has to offer! Tantalize your taste buds with some amazing Dutch oven cooking, indulge yourself in a mini food exposition and peruse the bake sale while enjoying the conviviality with your friends, families and neighbors.

Try your luck at pumpkin bowling or rekindle those ardent childhood memories of bobbing for apples. Watch others attempt the pumpkin pie eating contest, or try it yourself if you are daring (or still hungry)! Bring the kids for fall coloring activities, pumpkin and gourd painting and the surely-not-to-be-missed face painting!

There will be a raffle with many great prizes as well. Certain food and games will require tickets which one can purchase at the entrance. All proceeds will help the garden to fund its programs and activities throughout the upcoming year.

Also, sign up early for your garden plot for 2012! Anyone interested in setting up a plot for next year must fill out a plot application. Get all of your gardening information at the Harvest Festival and be sure to reserve your gardening space at their early-bird rate!

This event is also a food and coat drive. Canned and boxed food goods and winter clothing for all ages will be collected at the garden and donated to the Winnemucca Food Bank for distribution to those in our community in need.

Lastly, they invite you to stroll about the garden, hot chocolate or hot apple cider in hand, and enjoy the wonderful resource we share in the heart of our community.

They are also seeking volunteers to help on the day of the festival, and there are still plenty of activities to choose from. If you are unable to attend or volunteer on Saturday, you can still be there in spirit by lending a hand beforehand! The garden is looking for anyone interested in baking some treats for the bake sale, helping with decorations or simply donating non-perishable food items and winter coats for the food and coat drive.

Any questions? Please e-mail Ryan Clemens or Ronny Forney at winngarden@yahoo.com, call 623-2333 or stop by the garden office at 640 Melarkey St. They love visitors and will be more than happy to give you any information you might need! They look forward to seeing you at the 2011 Harvest Festival!
