WINNEMUCCA - A generous donation from the Nevada Community Foundation has helped officials from the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice breathe a little easier.
"As a non-profit organization, finding adequate funding can be daunting," said Humboldt Volunteer Hospice Executive Director Sherry Smith. "It seems we're always looking at where we can get the needed funding so we can help one more person and provide support to one more family."
Smith said that's why the $5,000 grant award from the Nevada Community Foundation came as such a sweet surprise.
"This is the second time this group has helped us," said Smith, "and we are just so grateful for the caring and responsible way in which they looked at our needs and decided we were a good fit with their organization."
The Nevada Community Foundation was incorporated in the fall of 1988 as the first community foundation of Nevada.
The group began with one sizeable endowment; over the past 22 years, the foundation's assets have grown to more than $25 million-money which is used to touch many areas of community needs, including education, social services, health, arts and culture, and the environment.
Smith said the funding will be directed toward meeting patients' needs in Humboldt County.
The Humboldt Volunteer Hospice is committed to honoring and supporting individuals in the Humboldt County community who are suffering from a chronic, debilitating or terminal illness. All hospice care is provided at no cost to patients. Families do not need a doctor's referral in order to access hospice services.
"This is one more generous donation to ensure that we are able to meet the needs of our patients," said Smith. "We sincerely thank the Nevada Community Foundation for their kind and generous donation."

Hospice also operates the Frugal Flamingo Thrift Store located at 720 E. Fourth St. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
