WINNEMUCCA - When all was said and done on Saturday, Nov. 16, hundreds of cold-weather items made it into the hands of the area's needy residents as part of the community-wide "Warm Hands Project."
"And we just wanted to say thank you to our community," said Humboldt Volunteer Hospice Executive Director Sherry Smith.
"They really came through in helping us make sure our residents are outfitted for the coming cold weather months."
The Humboldt Volunteer Hospice Frugal Flamingo Thrift Shop spearheaded the community-wide "Warm Hands Project" in partnership with the Winnemucca Ministerial Association.
Smith said, "There are so many good projects that take place during the winter season each year, and so many people who still want to help, so we thought it would be easier to all work together and make sure everyone gets the clothing and bedding they need to stay warm."
The Humboldt County community was asked to donate new or gently used coats, blankets, sleeping bags, boots and other cold-weather accessories toward the "Warm Hands Project."
In addition to hospice's Frugal Flamingo Thrift Store, the Poke 'n' Peek Thrift Shop and the Sonoma Thrift Shop acted as drop-off points.
The cold weather goods were then sorted by youth groups from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and St. Paul's Catholic Church on Nov. 13; distribution to needy residents took place on Nov. 16 in the basement of the Winnemucca United Methodist Church.
"It was a very successful event because everyone worked together to make it happen," said Smith.
She added, "We are very grateful for all the effort that went into this and the generosity in terms of goods and time that came from so many individuals and groups in our community."
