The Winnemucca Community Garden is place where the community can gather, grow, and celebrate nature. The Community Garden has always been unlocked and open to the public 24 hours a day, every day of the week for the community to enjoy. Leaving the Community Garden open allows plot holders to freely tend to their plots at their convenience and to encourage both informal and formal gatherings of community members. Unfortunately, the Community Garden and its plot holders have been experiencing theft from plots and vandalism to the facilities over the last few years.
As you may know, plot holders (families, individuals, and community groups) rent a space from the Community Garden for growing fruit, vegetables, and flowers for their own use. Some of the produce is donated to the Winnemucca Food Bank, and many plot holders share their produce with others as they choose. It has been disheartening to plot holders when their first beautiful red, ripe tomato has been plucked or their mature plants have been pulled from the soil.
Unfortunately, we do not know who caused the damaged at this time, but from past events suspect it may be someone that is uninformed about the Community Garden's plot ownership policy or random acts of vandalism. As a member of this community we ask for your help. Please keep an eye out for the vandalism. You can reach us at 623-2333 to report any damage or if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Winnemucca Community Garden - Board of Directors
