BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Commissioners voted at their June 27 meeting to go with a two-story building for the new courthouse/administrative building.

Judge Max Bunch, who sits on the building committee, gave a presentation to Lander County commissioners at their June 27 meeting on the pros and cons of a one- or two-story building. Representatives of the architect, VanWoert Bigotti Architects, and CORE Construction were also at the meeting and helped with the 20-minute presentation.

Bunch said the building committee, which also consists of Commissioner Brian Garner, commission Vice Chair Steve Stienmetz and local contractor Randy Clark, decided at their June 26 meeting to recommend to commissioners the two-story design.

The committee met June 26 with the representatives of the architect as well as representatives from CORE Construction, the CMAR (Construction Manager at Risk) for the project that is overseeing the preconstruction and construction stages of the building.

Jim Miller, director of operations for CORE, said the building is still in its early design stages and that design of the building will take approximately six months. There are several phases to the design stage and after design, the project will move to its construction phase, Miller said.

The building will sit next to the sheriff's office on a 3.5-acre parcel of land. It is an approximately $20.5 million project, with construction costs slated to be around $17.5 million, according to Miller.

The building is slated to house the functions of the employees and elected officials of Lander County, including the justice and district courts, the county clerk's office/archives, the treasurer's office, the assessor's office, the district attorney's office, the administrative/finance/human resources offices, the community development department, the Yucca Mountain Oversight Program office, the recorder/Department of Motor Vehicles Registration Division, a Nevada Highway Patrol office, the Building and Planning Department, the juvenile department, a law library, a public defender's office and others.

It may also include a county commission chamber and a public meeting/conference room. There may also be a large lobby area to accommodate for elections and various public functions.

Ample storage space may be included in a full or partial basement. The building may also feature the latest available technologies for energy conservation, information systems, lighting, security and construction methods and materials.
