BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County commissioners passed on Nov. 17 a resolution opposing the imposition of a federal dirt tax on the mining industry and supporting the National Mining Association (NMA) in opposition to the imposition of a federal dirt tax.
The resolution reads, whereas, national economic conditions have created a clamor in Washington to develop new sources of revenue to bolster the federal budget, and, whereas, the clamor to develop new revenue sources to bolster the federal budget have resulted in desperate and short-sighted proposals.
And whereas, the stalled national economy has pushed the federal administration and Congress toward a decision on how to manage America's wealth of mineral resources, and, whereas, the mining industry is one of a select few of industries in the United States performing well, producing growth in output, producing growth in employment, creating well-paying jobs and providing regional economic prosperity.
And whereas, the alternatives developed relative to management of America's mineral resources appear to have been culled to two very divergent options; one, a forward-thinking plan and assessment that would maximize mining opportunities and assist in providing for America's self-sufficiency; and two, a very punitive $1.8 billion tax assessed upon the volume of dirt moved in mining operations that would serve to complicate and inhibit one of the very few well-performing industries in the current national economy.
And whereas, the imposition of such a dirt tax would serve to penalize American miners for every pound of dirt they move and threaten thousands of high-paying jobs, and, whereas, the imposition of such a dirt tax would jeopardize mineral output, mining employment opportunities and, potentially cripple the regional economic prosperity created by a strong mining industry.
And whereas, Lander County, Nev., fully and voraciously supports the mining industry and our citizens employed within the mining industry and mining-related industries, and, whereas, Lander County, Nev., fully supports federal initiatives that create a stronger, self-sufficient America that imports less minerals and raw materials and provides its citizens with well-paying employment opportunities.
And whereas, the Lander County Board of Commissioners, representing the citizenry of Lander County, Nev., cannot and does not support the imposition of a federal dirt tax, and, whereas, the Lander County Board of Commissioners fully supports the National Mining Association (NMA) in opposition to the imposition of a federal dirt tax.
Now, therefore it be resolved that the Lander County Board of Commissioners hereby registers its opposition to the imposition of a federal dirt tax and fully supports the NMA in opposition to the imposition of a federal dirt tax.
