Cody Russell Nielson 17, son of Russ and Janae Nielson, passed away Oct. 20 at his home surrounded by his family. Cody fought a long 2 1/2 year battle with desmoplastic small round cell tumor. This type of cancer is a very aggressive grower affecting the abdominal area of its victims, which are mostly young males. Cody was a very courageous young man during all the trials, and horrific pain he suffered these last few weeks. Cody received treatment for this cancer in Oakland, Calif., Houston, Texas, Primary Children's Hospital and the Huntsman Cancer Society in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Cody was born and raised in Winnemucca. He attended Grass Valley Elementary, Winnemucca Jr. High, and Albert M. Lowry High School. Cody loved basketball, bowling and playing video games with his friends and his cousin Bryton Finlinson.
Cody is survived by his parents Russ and Janae Nielson; two sisters Cheryl Stout (Jonathon) and their two children Andrew and Ashlee of San Diego, Calif., Stacy Standaert (Lawrence) and their three children Mariah, Hayley, and Autumn of Elko; grandparents Winston Nielson of Mapleton, Ore., and Gail and Janice Buttars of Logan, Utah. He is preceded in death by his grandmother Mary Nielson of Oak City, Utah.
Cody will always be missed and never forgotten by everyone who had come in contact with him throughout his life. He was a true friend, a great brother, an amazing uncle and a loving son. Cody's family would like to thank the community of Winnemucca, Kayla from Genesis home health, Sherry and Cyndi from Humboldt Hospice, and all their family and friends for their support.
