Just in time for the Halloween creepy-crawlies, the students in Michelle Pasquale's zoology class at Lowry High School have finished collecting a variety of arthropods including spiders, insects and crustaceans. Each group of students had to collect a minimum of 25 specimens and correctly display them by presenting the specimens properly with wings and legs correctly mounted on a pin. They also had to classify each specimen with the location of capture, the date, the common name and the order.
Students made their collections while also learning about the ecological importance of each subphyla and dissecting a different specimen each week to apply the internal and external anatomy to their form and function.
Michael Donovan, a student in the zoology class replied when asked about his project, "I had no idea that animals were put into so many classes and groups."
Classification and anatomy of the animal kingdom along with their ecological importance will continue to be studied as the year progresses.
