"There are still kids, parents, and grandparents in Winnemucca who don't know about Day Camp!" lamented Marielena Connell who's been presiding over summertime activities for local kids for 16 years. However, Connell noted, the first of July is perfect for getting involved in day camp because by summer's second month, boredom may be setting in.
The City of Winnemucca's Day Camp activities will continue for another month, so there's still plenty of time to enjoy supervised play at the park, swim days, movie days, bowling days and library days.
Monday through Friday mornings, kids ages 6 - 10 can enjoy supervised fun at Day Camp. Rather than weekly or monthly sign-up fees, there is a general day rate of $10, with $6 additional on Tuesdays for a movie and snack and $3.50 additional on Thursday for bowling, a slice of pizza and a small drink. "They don't have to come every day," said Connell, "we're here whenever they need us and they pay for only the days they come." And, because Day Camp activities are mainly in the morning, there are still plenty of hours for family time or lazing around.
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are swim days at the Sage Heights outdoor swimming pool, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays are movie days - kids meet at 8 a.m. in the Day Camp room at the building just to the left of Bode Howard Memorial Pool (off of Haskell Street) for play at the park, kick ball or play tennis from 8:30-9:30 then head to the movie theater for a G or PG movie - they're done by 1 p.m.
Thursdays are library and bowling days. Everyone meets in the Day Camp room at 8 a.m. They play at the park until 9:30 a.m. then head to Humboldt County Library for story reading time and to check out books. That's followed by bowling, starting at 11 a.m., done by 1 p.m.
"I really enjoy doing day camp each year," said Connell. "There is a good number of kids here on average every morning," she added, "this seems to be 'the place to be.'"
High schooler Shannon Munk, one of Connell's assistants at Day Camp, put the average number of kids at Day Camp at about 25. Connell's other assistants are Macie Mavity, Auri Criddle, and Maisie Paquette.
When asked how they like day camp, one camper responded that he likes it so much that his friend is planning to start coming too. Another said her favorite activities at day camp are swimming and playing in the sand. Too busy to be bothered answering the question at length, several others said only, "It's fun."
