Jean Kinney was appointed to the Regional Planning Commission at Tuesday's city council meeting following the end of the terms for the city's two previously appointed representatives.
Kinney told the council she has always thought of Winnemucca as home. Even though she didn't move here until 2005, it is where her husband is from.
"I'm very interested in the development of the city," she said.
Kinney said following the meeting that she sees the appointment as an opportunity to give back to the city of Winnemucca.
"I want to contribute a bit and get more involved in city life," she said.
Mayor Di An Putnam said Kinney has become very aware of the goings on in the town during her time here and was happy to make the appointment.
"It is with great happiness that I appoint you to the Regional Planning Commission with the approval of the council," Putnam said.
Councilmen Ken Tipton thanked Kinney for her interest and said she would be a "real asset to the group."
The council voted unanimously to appoint her to one of the two vacant positions.
Resident Sharon Smith had also submitted a letter of interest for appointment to one of the vacancies, but withdrew it prior to the meeting, saying she was hesitant to make the commitment and wants to focus on enjoying her recent retirement.
The appointment starts July 1 and Putnam said the second vacancy is still open. The city would certainly like to hear from anyone interested in filling the open spot, she said.
