Churches planning ecumenical prayer services

WINNEMUCCA - Three churches are teaming up for a series of ecumenical prayer services over the next few months, with the goal of peace and reconciliation for the community and the world.

The prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 24 at Word of Light Fellowship, March 23 at St. Paul's Catholic Church and April 27 at the United Methodist Church of Winnemucca.

Pastor Gayle Basten of the Word of Light Fellowship Church invited all members of the public to attend. She said it is not about converting anyone or forcing people to go to church.

"We're really excited about this," she said. "We hope to bring everyone together. No matter what you believe, you can buy into prayer."

She said the services will feature songs and a quiet, contemplative mood. She encouraged people to bring small flashlights to help read the lyrics.

Basten said the churches will get together after the final service and decide whether to make it a monthly event.
