Christmas cheer this weekend in Winnemucca

Several events herald the season

WINNEMUCCA - There are several ways to capture the Christmas spirit this weekend in Winnemucca. From an art show at the Humboldt Museum to a retelling of the classic tale "A Christmas Carol," there's something for everyone.

Friday and Saturday

The White Sage Theatre is presenting a new and modernized version of the ever popular Charles Dickens story A Christmas Carol. Performances are at the LDS Church, 111 West McArthur Street.  Two performances remain on Friday and Saturday evening at 7 pm.  Admission is free.

The Winnemucca Civic Chorus is presenting their annual ChoirFest with members from several choral groups, each of which will present selected favorite songs.  Because of the season, you can expect a lot of Christmas carols.  Performances are at the First Baptist Church, 515 Garrison St.  There will be a Friday evening performance at 7 p.m. and a matinee on Saturday at 2 p.m. Admission is free, but a donation is suggested so that the chorus can buy more music.

Saturday

Zion Lutheran Church holds their Craft and Bake Sale on Saturday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. This event is always a treat, with tables full of baked goods, handmade gifts and decorations tempting shoppers. Zion Lutheran Church is located at 3205 N. Highland Dr., Winnemucca.

The Humboldt Museum throws wide the doors at the historic St. Mary's Church for their Fourth Annual Holiday Art Show and Sale. There will be offerings from artists working in ceramics, photography, jewelry, mosaics, hand-knitted items, fine art and more. Hours are 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., with the show closing just before the Parade of Lights. Live music, and a no-host bar round out the fun. The Humboldt Museum is located at 175 Museum Ave., just off US Hwy 95 and Jungo Rd.

The Winnemucca Parade of Lights begins at 5:30 p.m. It's "Snowmen on Parade" as the annual Chamber of Commerce Parade of Lights travels down Bridge Street in Winnemucca. Line the streets and get ready for a candy-tossing, light-twinking good time.

Humboldt Volunteer Hospice will sponsor the third annual "Lasting Lights of Love" Memorial Christmas Tree Lighting Service on the convention center lawn at the corner of Winnemucca Boulevard and Melarkey Street. The ceremony will take place directly following the Parade of Lights and will be held on Nixon Lawn, in front of the Winnemucca Convention Center. The names of all loved ones will be read; the tree lighting will follow. After, community residents are invited to enjoy caroling on the convention lawn.

Country singer Mary Kaye Knaphus returns to the Winnemucca Senior Center for a benefit concert for the Kitchen Expansion Project, slated to break ground in Spring of 2014. Mary Kaye's concert kicks off right after the Parade of Lights, so folks can enjoy the parade, then come up to the center for hot chocolate and cookies, and a great concert! Tickets are $15. There will also be Christmas cookies, hot beverages and treats like homemade Christmas goodies to take home or give as gifts. Mary Kaye has a new Christmas CD out, which will also be on sale at the concert.

Saturday and Sunday

The Winnemucca Crafters hold their 38th annual Christmas Craft Show in the West Hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center on Saturday and Sunday. Show hours are 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. each day. Admission is free.[[In-content Ad]]
