WINNEMUCCA - Digital TV channels are now available in many rural areas of Humboldt County, and more will be coming in the near future. They can be received by most televisions made after 2006 and nearly all televisions purchased since 2009. Older TVs must be used with a digital set-top box.
The television (or set-top box) should be connected to an outdoor UHF antenna and there must be a clear line-of-sight to the TV transmitter location for best results. Follow the instructions that come with your television or set-top box to find these digital channels and periodically scan for new channels to ensure that you have all of the stations available in your area.
TV viewers in the Valmy area can now receive six digital channels. Antennas should be aimed at Golconda Summit. In the next few months, two more channels will become available in this area. Analog television signals are no longer broadcast in this part of Humboldt County.
Viewers in Golconda and the Paradise Valley area that use signals coming from Saipan Peak currently have eight digital channels and five analog channels available. In the coming months, all the analog stations will be turned off. Digital replacements will be available for all analog channels except for the Reno NBC station. The only NBC station broadcast from Saipan Peak will be 7.1 from Boise.
Viewers in Orovada, King's River Valley and the Bottle Creek area will be able to get digital channels 8.1 and 8.2 within a few weeks. Your antenna should be pointed at the south end of the Double H Mountains. Later this winter, other channels will become available here. Analog channel 60 will no longer be broadcast in this area.
McDermitt area viewers now have several digital PBS channels available. Over the next few months (weather permitting) all of the analog stations broadcast from High Peak will be turned off and replaced by digital channels. Officials hope to have seven digital channels on the air in this part of the county before spring, and several more by next summer. High Peak is located north and slightly east of McDermitt.
