Celebrating Thanksgiving at the Senior Center

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - It is special that two WWII veterans are regular attendees at the Senior Center for lunch daily. They are George Adams and Ray Pruess. We honored all of our veterans with a free lunch on Nov. 14. The volunteer council paid for their lunch. This was a small way we could say thanks for everything they have done for us.

The National Turkey Foundation of Battle Mountain again donated nine turkeys for Thanksgiving dinner at the Senior Center. Dinner was served at noon on Nov. 18. About 77 people enjoyed a sit-down dinner with all of the trimmings. Many home bound meals were delivered on this day also. It is always good to see people we have not seen for a long time and visit with them. The day was warm and balmy. A special thanks to our cooks Tammy and Dayna and to others that helped. Everyone commented on how good it was.

The Senior Center bake sale-bazaar was held on the 19th of November. Cakes, breads, candies and cookies were baked for the sale. There was a nice assortment of each. I have promised to make pies next year for the sale. We had four vendors join us this year for our sale. The seniors made some nice pincushions to sell. They have rice, stuffing, more rice, and some steel wool was put in to help keep your pins sharp. We have a few left if you would like to see them. A quilt has recently been added to our raffle. It has bright colors mainly blue and yellow in it. It was made by Mary Lou Rives. Our raffle will take place on Dec. 16. You can still buy tickets for it. We would like to thank everyone that helped make our sale-bazaar a success. I do not want to forget the lunch of excellent chili, stew, biscuits and cornbread. Many stopped to have lunch with us.

Ervin and I recently went to Sedro Woolley, Wash., to have an early Thanksgiving with his family. The snows in the Cascade Mountain Range and the Blue Mountains can pile up fast and early in the season. Sedro Woolley is north of Seattle about 75 miles. We passed thru Cle Elm, Wash., where the snow was already up to three feet. Some winters it gets an accumulation up to 30 feet. I brought back some Washington apples called Cameos. They are good bakers and juicy eating apples. A fun dip for them is to mix: 1 pk (8 oz.) cream cheese, ¼ cup granulated sugar, ½ cup brown sugar, one tsp. vanilla ext. and ½ pk. Toffee bits. You may use Heath toffee bits. Stir and enjoy! This is not only a fun dip it is even healthful. The streets in Sedro Woolley are lined with 6-8 ft. carvings from cedar trees. They have carvings of eagles, bears, cowboys having a gun battle and other notorious figures. Most of them are done during the 4th of July celebration. It would be fun to watch them being carved.

Thanks again to all that helped to make our bake sale-bazaar a success. We hope each of you have a safe and happy Xmas season.
