Carl Vernon Haas, Jr.

Carl Vernon Haas, Jr. passed away on Oct. 4, 2013, at his home in Kingston, Nev. Carl was born on July 8, 1929, to Jewel E. Conner Hass, and Carl V Hass, Sr., in Dallas, Texas. Carl graduated from high school in Tonopah, Nev., and, in later years graduated from the University of San Diego, where he became a paralegal specializing in water rights.

Carl married Del Loomis, at sea, on Oct. 30, 1967. He spent many years ranching in Smoky Valley with his wife, Del, where he built the RO and Wineglass ranches. He will be especially remembered for his many adventures including his Mexican Gold Mining Expedition, building the town of Kingston, battling the government over water rights, and sailing around the world, as he wrote the story of his life, "Around the World in 80 Years." Carl loved to watch the San Francisco Bay and its sunsets, visit his friends in Mexico, smell the wild flowers in Death Valley, and gaze out over Smoky Valley with its dramatic mountains and sunsets. He was an accomplished small plane pilot and spent many hours high above the earth flying in the clouds.

Carl is survived by: his daughters, Leslie Shoopman, of Fallon, Nev., and Sunny Allen of Reno, Nev.; his grandchildren, Cassandra Shoopman, Alexandra Shoopman, Cody Brown, and Cheyenne Brown; Kathryn Doheny, whom Carl thought of as a daughter; and Patricia Brickley, longtime friend and companion. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his wife, and his sister, Yvonne Newsam.[[In-content Ad]]
