Completion of the three-story hotel on the north end of town is a little behind schedule, but owner Kenny Nagra says they're getting close. The name of the new hotel describes a fundamental difference between it and other local hotel or motel accommodations.

"Candlewood Suites" will add 83 rooms to Winnemucca's hotel/motel count but each room is called a "suite" because it includes a kitchen area with tile floor, full-size refrigerator, stove-top, microwave oven, kitchen sink, kitchen ware, table and chairs.

The Candlewood Suites Internet site describes it as a "long-term stay" hotel, and in addition to the kitchens, each room will have satellite TV and a DVD player. The lobby has a business center with computer and fax accessibility and there is a central laundry room for guests.

The hotel has a fitness center. Room rates will range from $129 to $189, said Nagra, who noted handicap accessible suites are available and some suites have one bed, some two and some have a bedroom separate from the kitchen and living area.

The hotel is being built by Metcalf Builders Inc., of Carson City.

Metcalf Builders' superintendent David Ballance said there are about 45 construction workers on the job right now, from a project high of about 120 workers. Ballance said most of the subcontractors on the job were also from out-of-town. Ballance said the company would have been open to bids from local subcontractors.

A local contractor who is working on the project is Hunewill Construction which did the beginning dirt work and will be paving the parking lot when the weather cooperates for long enough.

There are refrigerators, TVs, beds and other furniture in boxes everywhere right now. Carpet is in on the first floor, and is being installed on the second floor, with the third to follow.

Nagra purchased the lot for the new hotel from Red Sheppard. Hunewill broke ground on April 1. Nagra also owns the Holiday Inn Express in Winnemucca.[[In-content Ad]]
