Busy weekend on tap for Lovelock

LOVELOCK - This weekend will be a busy one for Lovelock residents. Hundreds of visitors will converge onto the small town for a weekend of activities.

The Lover's Aloft Balloon Festival will start out in full swing on Thursday evening, with a Glow Show on Main Street in front of the Pershing County Courthouse. Balloons will launch Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings from the Knisley Fields off Airport Road.

Various other activities are planned in conjunction with the balloon festival. Call the Pershing County Chamber of Commerce at 273-7213 for a full schedule of ballooning activities.

Also scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday is the Big Meadows Upland Bird Championships. Last year the event had 120 participants in the shoot. Event organizers are expecting about the same this year.

"You never really know how many people will come until the day it starts," said Bing Wesner Jr., one of the event organizers. "We take entries up until the time of the event."

People have already registered from Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Oregon and California, Wesner said. The shoot is on the Running W Ranch off Arobio Lane. Puppy classes and singles prelims will be Friday, with Doubles prelims on Saturday. Finals for both Singles and Doubles will be on Sunday.

The 1A/2A Northern Region Wrestling Championships will be held at the Pershing County High School gym on Saturday. The tournament starts at 9 a.m. Athletes from about a dozen schools are expected to attend. The top four placers will qualify for the state wrestling tournament in Las Vegas the following weekend.

The Eagle's Annual Crab Feed will be held on Saturday night at the Pershing County Community Center. The event is already sold out, Eagle member Jeff Campbell reported.

Residents can't say "nothing ever happens in Lovelock" - at least not this weekend.
