Busy holiday weekend in Humboldt County

WINNEMUCCA - Shoppers and revelers should pull out their parkas and get ready for a great weekend of holiday activities. The events include two craft shows, the annual Parade of Lights and the Hospice "Lasting Lights of Love" Memorial Tree lighting immediately after the parade.

Opening at 10 a.m. will be the Paradise Valley 4-H Club inviting the public to a craft fair at the Paradise Valley Community Hall. There are sure to be hundreds of great gift ideas for everyone on your list - plus a tasty lunch for sale from the 4-H Club.

Beginning at 3 p.m., shoppers are invited to stop at the Humboldt County Museum for their Night at the Museum arts and crafts show.

The Humboldt Museum will have all the buildings open - including St. Mary's Church and the Richardson House for public viewing - and there will be tables set up throughout the buildings with items for sale from local artists and crafters. From fine art to exquisite handmade items, there will be a wealth of talent on display.

The fun continues at the museum until 8 p.m., so revelers are welcome to come up after the Parade of Lights, if that fits your schedule better. The Humboldt Museum is located at 175 New Jungo Road; near the intersection of Jungo Road and U.S. 95.

The Parade of Lights theme for this year is "It's beginning to look a lot like a Nevada Christmas." The parade begins promptly at 5:30 p.m., and will travel down Bridge Street from Spare Time Bowl to the Winnemucca Hotel. Humboldt County Chamber Director Debbie Stone says the parade entries run the gamut - from walking and dancing entries to huge decorated floats.

Immediately after the parade, the public is invited to come to Nixon Lawn, on the corner of Winnemucca Boulevard, and Melarkey Street, where the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice will hold their "Lasting Lights of Love" Memorial Christmas Tree ceremony.

Hospice Executive Director Sherry Smith said the memorial tree lighting is one way to pay special honor to loved ones who have passed on. "This is a time for joy and happiness," said Smith of the holidays, "but it's also a time for peaceful reflection and remembering."

Smith added, "This will be a beautiful tree and a touching ceremony that will help us feel joy while we reflect on the memory of our loved ones."

The Memorial Tree features a light and ornament purchased in honor of loved ones who have passed on. Mayor Di An Putnam, who will preside over the event, will read the names of all loved ones; the tree lighting will follow.

To end the evening, community residents are invited to enjoy caroling on Nixon Lawn and hot chocolate. Santa also will be walking around and mingling with the crowd. Bring your camera - there are sure to be plenty of special moments you will want to capture forever.
