LOVELOCK - The long-awaited remodeling of the Pershing County Senior Center kitchen is complete. The center served its first lunch on May 20, a little more than a month since its closure on April 15.
"We were closed about a week longer than we anticipated but that is because our food delivery is after lunch on Thursdays and we would not have had food to cook before Friday, so we used the extra time to insure everything was cleaned up and stowed appropriately," Pershing County Senior Center Director Barbara Tobin wrote in her newsletter.
The senior center was closed to remodel the kitchen, complete with new flooring and appliances. It passed its health inspection May 16, food was delivered and now seniors are enjoying their lunchtime get-togethers.
The center will hold an open house on May 31 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. with tours of the remodeled kitchen.
"This will likely be the only time you will get to walk through our kitchen," Tobin said.
Sixty people and businesses donated to the Senior Center Square Foot Club, making the new flooring in the kitchen possible. Tobin has placed a plaque on the wall with all the participants' names on it.
On May 31 the center will also be serving its monthly breakfast from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.
In June the center will hold its sixth birdhouse raffle. The public is invited to make a birdhouse, donate it to the center for raffle on June 21. Bags are placed next to each birdhouse so you can put your raffle ticket toward the house you would most like to win. Entries should be at the center no later than June 14.
The van is scheduled to travel to Fallon on Wednesday, June 12, and to Reno on Tuesday, June 25. There is a suggested donation, although not required, for seniors 60 and over of $10 round trip to Reno and $8 round trip to Fallon.
Those under 60 years of age can also ride the van on scheduled trips; however, there is a required fee of $15 round trip to Reno and $10 round trip fee to Fallon. Contact the center at 273-2291 for more information.
