Burning leaves? Don't do it in a barrel

Don't burn your leaves in a burn barrel! It is not allowed in the City of Winnemucca. Instead, burn your leaves in an open area and make sure you have a hose nearby to extinguish the fire. Do not leave the fire unattended at any time. Also, do not burn after dark.

Burning leaves in a barrel keeps the heat in, and the leaves smolder for a very long time. The leaves may even re-ignite.

It is extremely important to notify Humboldt County Dispatch that you will be burning leaves in your yard. Provide the dispatcher with your address and give them the approximate time that you will be burning. Then, after every last leaf and twig has been burnt and extinguished, call the dispatch again and let them know you have finished with the burn.

Failure to comply with these rules may result in a citation. And, if your neighbor calls in a fire, when you're just burning leaves, valuable city resources are diverted from any real emergencies that may occur.[[In-content Ad]]
