Bugle reporter becomes community news editor

After serving as staff writer for four and a half years, Heather Hill recently became the community news editor for The Battle Mountain Bugle.

In addition to her current duties of reporting on local news, covering events and taking photos, she will be assisting with content decisions, story placement, layout and formatting.

"This is a great step up and a way for me to become more involved in the newspaper which I care deeply about," Hill said. "I am so happy for this opportunity to contribute more to a great community and I hope the Bugle continues to live up to people's expectations."

Hill said she is thrilled to get feedback from the community on stories they see in the newspaper and she is always open to suggestions of stories people would like to see.

She said she is here for the community and wants to make the newspaper the best it can be. She encourages people to call her with comments, suggestions or story ideas at (775) 623-5011 ext. 210. or email her at h.hill@winnemuccapublishing.net.

Hill loves covering all types of stories. Her favorites are features and human interest. She loves to dig into people's lives.

Stories and events she looks forward to covering are some crime cases, her annual Valentine's Day articles, feel-good holiday stories, the annual Memorial and Veteran's Day ceremonies, the first babies of the year, the World Human Powered Speed Challenge and the Lincoln Highway Car Show in Austin.

The stories that have most inspired and touched her have been Dylan Huddleston's brave battle with cancer, Art Clark donating his kidney to his son, Dr. John Peters skydiving into foreign countries to administer medical care, Melissa Bakker combating breast cancer, paraplegic Madonna Long, finding Dooley, a dog that survived a tragic car crash and was found after 52 days in the wilderness, Houston Lucas' battle with cancer and teacher Jacqueline Lindsey shaving her head in solidarity with Lucas' brave fight and too many others to count.

Hill said she is excited about her new column that she started this year called To Put it Simply. It is her outlet to be creative and write about things that have happened in her life.

Hill has a degree in journalism from the UNR Reynolds School of Journalism with a major in print news and a minor in English writing.

She did her internship at the Elko Daily Free Press and started her journalism career at the Lahontan Valley News. She has also worked at the Daily Sparks Tribune. She has covered every beat and been a newspaper reporter for 11 years. She also spent six years as a marketing specialist at The National Judicial College in Reno.

She has been a resident of Nevada for 24 years, coming from the south Jersey Shore. She has lived in Las Vegas, Elko, Reno, Fallon and Winnemucca.

Her husband is Mike Hill and they have three dogs and five cats that are their children.

In her spare time, she reads fantasy novels, magazines and news, writes fantasy stories, essays and poetry, studies famous human rights activists, spends time with her husband, watches sci-fi shows and news documentaries and works on her new column.

"I look forward to the challenges of my new position and am eager to make the Bugle even better," she said. "I hope people will call and email me with input and suggestions. Hearing from the community makes my job satisfying. If just one person gains something from something I write or a photo I take then the hard work is all worth it. Not everyone is always going to be happy but I want to try the best I can."
