WINNEMUCCA - Not one person was more surprised with the outcome of the Lowry High School junior varsity football team's 52-0 win at Truckee on Saturday, than coach John Brooks.
"That was the last thing that I was expecting," Brooks said. "Before the game, I was looking at their kids and I thought we would be in trouble. They had some good-sized kids, but it was not the Truckee we are used to seeing. I was a little nervous going in, because they did not have a freshmen team last year and I was not sure who they took up to the varsity team."
The Buckaroos (2-0) found the end zone often in the first half, scoring five touchdowns to build a 33-0 lead at halftime. Lowry added two more scores in the third quarter to take a 46-0 advantage and the game was played with a running clock from that point on.
Thomas Schwartz had four touchdowns and Christian Gray two, to lead the offensive attack for the Buckaroos.
"I was impressed with the way Christian played," Brooks said. "He hung in the pocket and threw the ball well and ran it when he needed to. He just makes good decisions back there and I hope he keeps improving."
The Buckaroos added one last touchdown in the fourth quarter to account for the final outcome.
"We pretty much ran the ball to run time off the clock," added the coach. "Our offensive line looked good. It is fun to beat them because they are still a good program. It was good for the kids. Not too many teams go up there and do what we did. We have been on the receiving end of some of those games and it's not very enjoyable."
Through two games this season, Lowry has outscored its opponents 98-0. The Buckaroos make their home debut tonight against Wooster at 5 p.m.
"There are things we need to improve on," Brooks said. "It will be nice to be at home. If we can play that well at home it will be a fun game."
