WINNEMUCCA - Members of the Lowry High School swim team had one final chance to advance to the Division I-A Regional Championships when they traveled to Reno this past Saturday for the Zephyr League Championships.
Lowry took a limited number of athletes due to prom. The boys finished sixth with 160 points and the Lady Bucks were seventh with 112 points. Truckee swept both team titles.
Emma Kracaw took advantage of the final week of competition, as the sophomore qualified for regional championships in the 200-yard freestyle. She shaved off three seconds from her previous best to finish with a time of 2 minutes, 29.10 seconds. The qualifying time for the girls in the 200-yard freestyle is 2:29.19.
Cheyanna Furnare posted a career-best time in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:16.52. and Katyln Barnes posted a new best time in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:19.66, taking off .50 seconds from her previous best.
Melissa Cervantes took off three second in the 100-yard freestyle with a career-best time of 1:22.06. Abbie Whitaker took 19 seconds off her previous time in the 500-yard freestyle to finish at 8:46.82 taking off 19 seconds. Jessica Jensen took off five seconds in the 500-yard freestyle to finish at 7:25.66.
Tori Echeverria, Kelsea Perkinson and Kracaw will compete as individuals for the Lady Bucks at the Division I-A North Regional Championships that get underway today in Carson City. Kenzie Maddox, Jessica Jensen and Sabrina Jensen join the Lowry girls as part of the relay teams that will also feature Echeverria, Perkinson and Kracaw.
On the boys side Jiovanni Madrid improved on his 200-yard freestyle time to 2:19.12 and the junior set a career-best time of 1:06.06 in the 100-yard freestyle. Madrid will go to regional championships in the 500-yard freestyle, which he qualified for earlier in the year.
Nathan Hales chopped five seconds off his previous best time in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 3:05.90. The junior took off nine seconds in 100-yard backstroke and finished with a time of 1:50.34. Jacob Hales clocked in at 1:10.28 in the 100-yard freestyle, which was .52 quicker than his previous best. He recorded a time of 30.63 in the 50-yard freestyle.
Chris Franco recorded a career-best time of 1:19.75 in the 100-yard freestyle, taking off four seconds. He was .07 seconds quicker in the 50-yard freestyle at 34.93.
Matthew Jock qualified for regional championships in the 50-yard freestyle at 26.76.
Leo Avila, Wyatt Lester, Madrid, Dain Maher, Matthew Ruehl, Jock and JR Perkinson will go to the regional championships for the boys.
"We had 18 career-best times in our last meet going into the regional," LHS head coach Mike Owens said. "So, overall it was a successful way to end the regular season. I'm looking forward to the regional, as the team we are taking will be very competitive in all their races."
