The Lowry High School cross country teams spent another day in the mountains with a trip to Tahoe City, Calif. The Buckaroos were on hand for the North Tahoe Kiwanis Invitational on Friday, Sept. 12. More than 45 schools from around northern Nevada and California were on hand for the meet.

"Overall, I thought we ran pretty well," said LHS coach Kathy Norcutt. "We did a lot more pack running and stayed with each other. If you look back at the times from last year, everybody is about a minute quicker. That is a good sign of improvement and learning to race."

Haley Weber paced the Lowry varsity girls, finishing 69th in a time of 32 minutes, 57.59 seconds, on the 3.3-mile course. Teammate Shannon Munk was 86th at 35:07.72 and Amanda Brandon placed 107th in a time of 37.51.15. Alexandria Ziemer finished 108th at 38:197.81 and Camryn Maher was 116th with a time of 39:03.88.

"The girls did a nice of finishing together," Norcutt said. "I would like them to have been a little faster but we ran this race on rest. We trained hard the day before, running an hour. So the legs were a little tired."

Truckee won the team title with 75 points, North Tahoe was second with 85 and Ponderosa, Calif. (113) was third. Atwater, Calif., finished fourth with 121 points and Fernley rounded out the five with 124 points. Spring Creek was sixth at 136, Elko placed seventh with 189 points and Notre Dame (202) and Calaveras (206) were eighth and ninth, respectively. Lowry was 13th at 379.

Devin Morris led the way for the varsity boys, as he finished 48th with a time of 24:34.93. Hayden Jeppsen was eight spots behind in 56th at 24:50.81 and Ethan Andrews was 73rd in a time of 25:53.75. Matthew Jock placed 107th in a time of 27:40.78 and Liam Gallups finished 144th at 32:31.91.

Spring Creek won the team title for a second straight year with 71 points. Elko (94) was second and Atwater (124) was third. Bret Harte, Calif., finished fourth with 131 points and North Tahoe rounded out the five with 132 points. Ponderosa (157), Calaveras (166), Silver Stage (183), Churchill County (193) and North Valleys (264) comprised sixth through 10th. Lowry finished 13th with 313 points.

The highlight of the day came from the Lowry sophomore boys, who shined once again. Kobe Fitzpatrick finished ninth in the 2.8-mile race at 21:00.91. Jonathan Madrid placed 11th at 21:27.06, Chanse McAllister was 19th in a time of 22:49.78 and Christopher Kearns was 24th at 22:49.84. Devin Dowd (23.24.84) and Omar Aranjo (25:01.90) were 30th and 40th, respectively.

Lowry and Truckee claimed the first two spots in the team standings with 42 and 52 points, respectively. Spring Creek was third with 55 points and Bret Harte was fourth at 90.

"All of the guys ran a great race," said the coach. "They are starting to show great things. The big plus is that everybody has good attitudes and ready to work. You don't see anybody just go through the motions."

Charice Brown recorded the best finish for the Lady Bucks in the freshmen/sophomore race at 10th with a time of 24:58.38. Emily Jock was 17th at 25:48.25.

Spring Creek and Elko topped the team standings with 30 and 46 points, respectively.

Lowry travels to Dayton today for the Dayton Invitational at 3 p.m.

"This will be the first time everyone runs together," Norcutt said. "We wont be split up into JV and varsity races. It's a flat course and the times should come down."[[In-content Ad]]
