Buckaroo freshmen use quick start to knock off Indians

Lutzow scored 18; Lowry improves to 13-1

WINNEMUCCA - In what has been a common site this year, the Lowry High School freshmen boys basketball team used a quick start en route to a 60-44 victory over Elko on Tuesday afternoon in Winnemucca.

Five different players scored in the first quarter as the Buckaroos built a 21-7 advantage. Brian Shettler scored eight of those points, Jared Taylor and Nathan Lutzow added four each and Christian Riddle hit a 3-point field goal.

"We were able to jump on them early and keep the lead from there," said LHS head coach Grant Beatty. "Any win over Elko is a good one. Right now we are just looking for more consistency with the guys coming off the bench."

The Indians cut the Buckaroo's lead to nine points in the second half but not closer as Lowry increased the advantage back to double figures by halftime.

Lutzow scored 10 of his game-high 18 points in the third quarter to help Lowry (13-1 overall, 7-0 Division I-A, 1-0 Ruby Mountain) build the margin back to 20 points, at 48-28.

Allen joined Lutzow in double figures with 10, while Taylor netted eight. Brody Goucher added six points, Riddle five, Jacob Hales two and Dominic Diaz one.

Lowry is back home Saturday for a pair of games against Fernley and Spring Creek. The Buckaroos play the Vaqueros at 9:30 a.m. and the Spartans at 1:30 p.m.
