Buckaroo freshmen boys basketball team drops opening game to Huskies

Lowry travels to Reno this weekend

WINNEMUCCA - After getting a chance to work out the kinks in a scrimmage against Galena last week, the Lowry High School freshmen boys basketball team took the floor this past Saturday afternoon in Winnemucca to open its season against Reno.

The Huskies held the Buckaroos to single digits in every quarter on their way to a 48-33 victory over the Buckaroos.

"We looked good in the scrimmage," said LHS head coach Grant Beatty. "We had a tough time finishing our shots today. We got ourselves in foul trouble and missed a lot of layups. I am thinking it was just the first game jitters."

Jacob Hernandez gave Lowry its only lead of the game early in the first quarter at 3-2 on an old-fashioned 3-point play where he made the basket and free throw. Hernandez scored five points in the first eight minutes of play and led the Buckaroos with 11 points.

The Huskies built a 12-6 advantage in the first quarter, when Lowry's Jake Barnes cut the deficit to four with one of his three buckets in the game.

Reno used an 8-0 run over a three-minute stretch in the second quarter to push its lead to 26-13 with 2:05 left in the first half. The Buckaroos held the Huskies scoreless for the final two minutes and picked up baskets from Brady Lange and Hernandez to close the gap to nine points, 26-17 at halftime.

That was as close as Lowry got as Reno started the third quarter on a 7-1 run, pushing the advantage to 33-18. The Buckaroos made just one field goal in the third quarter, and that was by Jed Teichert. Teichert scored five of the Buckaroos' seven points in the period and finished the game with nine points. The other two points in the third quarter came off of two free throws by Barnes.

The Huskies lead did not drop below 14 points in the final eight minutes of play and Reno led by as many as 19 points, before settling for the 15-point win.

Barnes added six points for the Buckaroos, Lange contributed four, Brian Kelly two and Salvador Perez one.

Lowry travels to Reno this weekend for the Damonte Ranch Winter Invitational. The Buckaroos play McQueen at North Valleys High School on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.. Friday's and Saturday's games will be determined after the game with the Lancers.

"We did some things to put ourselves in some bad spots," Beatty said. "We started out with a tough team today. We just need to go out and play a full game and stay positive. We are going to get ready to go to Reno, where we will see some tough teams."[[In-content Ad]]
