WINNEMUCCA - Coming off a lackluster performance that resulted in a tie with Churchill County on Tuesday, Sept. 17, the Lowry High School varsity boys soccer team was looking to rebound when it traveled to Fernley on Monday.
The Buckaroos (1-2-2 Division I-A North, 5-2-2 overall) did just that, recording a 13-1 blowout victory over the Vaqueros. It was the second win of the season for Lowry over Fernley, outscoring the Lyon County school 29-1 in those contests.
"We still didn't start well, and we have to fix that problem," said LHS head coach Steve Swanson. "We scored six goals, but it wasn't clean. The second half was much better and we did whatever we wanted to. It was a much better performance than we showed against Churchill County. That was a game that we should have never tied. I was able to play a lot of subs that were critical to the play."
Senior Carlos Aguilar closed in on his own school record for goals in the season with four more on Monday. In addition, he added six assists, accounting for 10 of the goals. Aguilar is still recovering from a knee injury suffered in the match with Truckee on Sept. 7.
"Carlos is getting healthier," added the coach. "We will see how he reacts when we get into tougher competition in the next couple of weeks. He was all over the field and Fernley could not stop him."
Giovanni Hernandez added a hat trick of his own with three goals on the quick field-turf surface in Fernley.
Kevin Blanco, Alex Roark, Jordan Diaz, Anthony Franco and Chris Mendoza each scored one goal.
"It was nice to get scoring from so many different players," Swanson said. "It was a good reboot from the Churchill County match and we needed to get refocused, especially for the Elko and Spring Creek matches that are coming up. We are good but there is another level that we can go up to. We hit that a couple of times already, but we need to get back to that level."
Lowry is back at home Saturday to host Dayton at 11 a.m. The Dust Devils enter the game winless in league play.
