Boys & Girls Club/Recreation Complex moving forward

In October 2013, a group of local citizens came together to bring a new Winnemucca Boys & Girls Club/Recreation Complex to Winnemucca. The stage is set and efforts are underway to secure the resources to make this vision become a reality.

The project is broken into three phases, and the good news is funding for Phase I of the project is secured. The phases of the project are detailed out below:

The first step of this process was to secure a location. A 43-acre site, contiguous to the northern boundary of Lowry High School and the west side of the recently completed Great Basin Avenue has been selected. This secured location would give the community a new sport and recreation complex that offers up-to-date facilities at one centralized location. The proposed complex will be developed in stages throughout the years as needs grow and resources are secured. The first stage will be the development of a 16-acre complex consisting of six new soccer/multi-purpose fields. Funds for phase I have been secured and development is moving forward.

The next step is the recreation Center. The proposed Recreation Center will consist of a gymnasium with suspended walking track, fitness center, youth facilities, administration space, and multi-purpose room that will be used as the interim site for the new Boys & Girls Club until phase III funding is secured. The gymnasium will be a regulation-sized court with a suspended walking track and will have seating for major events. A kitchen will be attached to the gym to host community functions. The new fitness center is designed for youth through senior citizens and will include cardiovascular equipment, premier weight circuit, and free weight area for a total body workout. A child-watch area will be attached for young children while the parents are using the Recreation Center.

The final step is the proposed Boys & Girls Club which will have a STEM center, fine arts center, and game room. The premier STEM center will be used by the high school during the day for their technology advancement classes and the Boys & Girls Club children after school. The technology center comes complete with computer lab, recording studio, media lab, photography, science & mathematics, engineering, and movie productions. This new center will also be the headquarters for the Boys & Girls Clubs education program. The Boys & Girls Club recognizes that quality recreation is essential to overall happiness and will have high energy game room to entertain Winnemucca's youth for generations to come. The fine arts center is a state-of-the-art facility with top-level equipment necessary to provide arts for Winnemucca's youth. The new Boys & Girls Club will commit to helping every child graduate on time with a plan for the future, live a healthy lifestyle, and have character and civic responsibility.

It is the group's long-term goal to develop a centrally located sport complex in the future that offers soccer, baseball, softball, tennis, football, and other sport activities that can utilize multi-purpose fields all at one location. This goal can't be achieved overnight and is part of a long-term vision for our community. However, securing a large site at this time makes it possible to expand throughout the years to meet our community's sport and recreation needs for generations to come.

It is also the group's vision to bring a state-of-the-art aquatic center to Winnemucca. This proposed center would be a competition pool with premier recreational swimming amenities. It is important to understand the cost to construct the aquatic center has put this facility out of our reach at this time. However, the need for this center has placed this addition on Winnemucca's master site plan.
