BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Battle Mountain Junior High School (BMJHS) held a Halloween Hall for the community on Oct. 27. As part of the event, BMJHS 21st Century Afterschool Program students participated in a door decorating contest. The winners were determined by student votes.

The event was organized to serve a dual purpose. One was to allow local youngsters to take part in trick-or-treating down the Haunted Hallway of the school, passing by the great works of art done by the school's students that participate in the 21st Century Afterschool Program. The students had one week to create their door decorations while attending the after-school program, about two hours a day.

The second was an attempt to gather some much-needed canned foods to help out those in need during the upcoming holidays. Entry into the hall was gained by bringing one canned food item per person, or by purchasing tickets that were on sale for 25 cents each or six for a $1. Kids up to age 14 were able to attend.

The BMJHS 21st Century Afterschool Program was able to collect four banana boxes full of canned foods. Those boxes were donated to the Helping Hands Food Bank, and will be distributed amongst those in need to help make their holiday meals a little brighter. Once again, the people of Battle Mountain have shown great caring and compassion when it comes to their giving nature.

The winners of the BMJHS Haunted Hallway door decorating contest were as follows:

Valerie Jones was the third-place winner. For her entry she received $10. Second place went to Mary Jane Cox, Danny Noriega and Mirella Casillas. They were given $15 to share. The first-place winners were Morgan Fischer, Julieta Franco and Maria Chavez. They received $20 to split.
