BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain Arts Presenters (BMAP) will present a writing workshop and public reading performance by Gretchen Skivington at the Battle Mountain Cookhouse Museum on Nov. 30.
The writing workshop will take place from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. with the public reading at 6 p.m. The writing workshop will be free to local students, seniors and teachers.
The cost of the workshop is $10 to the general public. Similar workshops command fees that range from $50 - $200. Anyone attending the workshop will also be able to attend the public reading for free.
Those interested in attending the writing workshop must pre-register by 5 p.m., Nov. 29 but should not wait until the last minute because space is limited.
Participants will enjoy personalized instruction and an overview of the writing process from the inception of an idea to publication. Registration forms are available at the Great Basin College Battle Mountain Center at 835 N. 2nd St.
At 6 p.m., Skivington will perform a public reading from her body of work. Skivington has a M.A. from the University of Nevada, Reno, (UNR) in Spanish/Basque/French.
Working as an oral historian at the Basque Studies Department at UNR, she was also the lexicographer for the first Basque-English dictionary and completed a collection of oral histories on Basque hotels.
While attending the University of California, Davis, Skivington received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. Recently, she received the Nevada Arts Council's Artist Fellowship and has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Sierra Arts Foundation.
She has lived and taught in Mexico, Germany, Spain and France. Currently, she teaches languages and humanities at Great Basin College in Elko. Her work has been published in Dibo, Brushfire and Halcyon.
General admission tickets for the reading will be sold at the door. The cost is $5. This event is made possible through a Tumble Words grant through the Nevada Arts Council.
The Battle Mountain Arts Presenters are dedicated to bringing diverse, professional performing arts experiences to rural Nevada. The group is 100 percent volunteer led and is open to anyone with a passion for the Arts who would like to volunteer.
BMAP relies on the generosity of individual donors, local businesses and grant funding from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts to present a wide range of performing artists each year.
