WINNEMUCCA - In addition to saving lives, those donating during the July 17 - 18 Winnemucca community blood drive will have the chance of winning a 2012 Toyota Corolla. This is the sixth year Northern Nevada Toyota dealers are offering a Toyota vehicle to be awarded in a drawing from among those donating blood at any United Blood Services drives between May 28 and Sept. 1. The Humboldt General Hospital Auxiliary is sponsoring the community drive in the west hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center. Hours are noon to 6:30 p.m. on July 17 and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 18. Technicians from United Blood Services of Reno will interview donors and make the blood draws. UBS is this area's nonprofit community blood provider. It collects blood from volunteer donors, then tests, processes and distributes it to 25 hospitals in eastern California and northern Nevada, including Humboldt General Hospital. Potential donors are those 17 years and older who weigh at least 110 pounds and are in reasonably good health. Those who have visited a dentist in the past 24 hours or taken antibiotics three days prior may not donate. A history of cancer in the last year or tattoos or body piercings in the last 12 months may defer a donor for a year. Donors should eat a low-fat meal prior to giving blood and bring with them photo identification and information on any medications they take. The virtually painless donation process takes about an hour. Auxiliary volunteers will provide juice and cookies after donations.
