WINNEMUCCA - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Winnemucca District, Humboldt River Field Office, will begin preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) to analyze the impacts of a right-of-way for a slurry pipeline, a water distribution system and water supply wells proposed by Nevada Iron LLC for its proposed Buena Vista Iron Ore Project. Only existing roads would be used and no new roads would be constructed. The proposed project is located at the former Buena Vista Iron Ore Mine, in Pershing and Churchill counties in Nevada. The BLM will accept comments through Nov. 28.
The proposal includes Nevada Energy (NVE) constructing an electrical transmission line. The transmission line crosses private and portions of several sections of public lands. The transmission line and route is a single pole line (above ground), and begins at the existing NVE site in Pershing County and terminates at a new facility constructed on privately owned land in Churchill County. The transmission line would be approximately 27 miles long and approximately four feet wide.
Nevada Iron LLC's proposal consists of:
• Construction of a buried slurry pipeline to carry iron ore concentrate from Churchill County to a facility and return water pipeline in Pershing County. The slurry pipeline would be 27 miles in length and eight inches in diameter.
• Construction of the return water pipeline which would be the same in length and diameter as the slurry pipeline.
• Construction of a water distribution system to supply water to its materials processing facilities in Churchill County. The water distribution system would consist of five groundwater supply wells and approximately ten miles of buried water pipelines.
The pipeline is expected to carry between 1.5 and 2.0 million tons of iron ore concentrate annually.
Copies of the scoping letter and map are available on the NEPA Web page at http://www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/fo/wfo.html.
