BLM to host National Public Lands Day event on Sept. 21

WINNEMUCCA - The Bureau of Land Management, Winnemucca District, together with Nevada Outdoor School, Friends of the Black Rock/High Rock and Friends of Nevada Wilderness, will host a National Public Lands Day event on Sept. 21 at Soldier Meadows. Soldier Meadows is located within the Black Rock/High Rock National Conservation Area.

An overnight opportunity for volunteers starts Friday, Sept. 20, and ends Sunday, Sept. 22, with activities planned for each night. Camping places are available either at the Soldier Meadows cabin or adjacent areas. Volunteers can arrive at any time on Friday. Toilets will be available but there are no shower facilities.

A bring your own community dinner is planned for Friday night and a Dutch oven cook-off will take place Saturday night with winners receiving awards. Bring your favorite camp foods, sit down to a meal with fellow volunteers and make some new friends. Horseshoes and a croquet tournament will finish the festivities Saturday evening.

Volunteer activities will occur Saturday, Sept. 21, starting at 9 a.m. at Soldier Meadows. Activities include campsite, trail and cabin cleanup, minor fence repair, light painting inside the cabin and canal maintenance at Mud Meadows. All supplies and equipment will be provided for all the day's activities.

Soldier Meadows cabin is located approximately 50 miles north of Gerlach on Soldier Meadows Road. The road to the cabin is not paved, but is in good condition; however, the BLM highly recommends a four-wheel drive vehicle with a least one spare tire. Volunteers should also be prepared for long exposure to the sun, wind and possible sudden thunderstorms.
