Birth control back on agenda

By Lorraine Corredoura

I would like the chance to voice my disgust at the politicians who have put birth control back on the agenda to be voted on again.

This matter is quite personal to me, but yet, I would be willing to listen to any politician (especially those who were born male), and whom have experienced "gang rape," and then forced to carry the fetus/baby to term simply for the reason being that the mother-to-be was classified "mentally challenged." This did happen to me in the sense that my dear friends' 15-year-old daughter was raped (she had the mental capacity of approximately a 7-year-old) at the time, but did not tell anyone for fear of retaliation by the offending males.

When my friend figured out what had happened, she immediately got her daughter into an OBGYN with thoughts of doing a fairly safe medical procedure with hopes of destroying the fetus. Because the laws were such as they were, the procedure was not allowed. The one and only reason being "the mother-to-be would not fully understand what was going on, and thus not be able to make an educated decision regarding the pregnancy." Should I add here that the young mother had no conception as to what pregnancy was, or how she had managed to get pregnant - but yet, her parents were still not allowed to abort the pregnancy.

The parents tried every way they could think of to ever keep this from happening again, and tried to get a court order to have a permanent procedure done so the girl would never become pregnant again (accidently or otherwise). Needless to say, the parents went as far in the judicial system as they could go, but again were turned down for the same reasons thanks to the laws our politicians have put on the books. The pregnancy almost destroyed the young girl and her parents when all they wanted was to stop any unnecessary disruption in their already chaotic lives.

So please, why do the politicians form both parties (and also seem to be more male than female) seem to bring this topic up every few years. This country does not need any more unplanned babies who probably for the most part are raised by the government on the public welfare system.
