The night before the big race, though, organizers will host a benefit concert to kick off the cancer weekend - a concert they hope will further fill coffers meant to help support local cancer victims.
"Adrian" will perform in the back room at The Martin Hotel at 7 p.m. Friday, May 11. Tickets are $15 each and are on sale at The Martin Hotel, OK Tire, Northern Nevada Eyecare and Lander Physical Therapy.
The 20-year-old singer/songwriter and college student lives on a ranch in northern California. She says her songs come straight from the pages of her life where she daily rubs shoulders with tough horses, cattle, weather and cowboys.
Organizers promise a memorable evening performance, but they also hope concert-goers will realize how helpful their ticket purchase is to those in need.
"Every little bit of money helps," said Mary Maher Bengoa who co-organizes the race along with her mother, Amorita Maher. "Each dollar, each donation, means that we can help support someone in our communities who has cancer."
This year's 10th annual race will begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at French Ford Middle School; registration and packet pickup will take place from 3 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.
Participants may choose to run, ride or walk 1-, 3- and 5-mile courses. Bengoa said in the past, some participants have even driven golf carts and horse-drawn carts.
Whatever the mode of transportation, Bengoa said, "This event is all about fun while we create a community of support; all ages and walks of life are welcome."
Registration fees are $25 for adults, $20 for senior citizens and team members, and $10 for children under 10. In addition, phantom racers are welcome for $25.
