WINNEMUCCA - May 12, all northern Nevada residents are invited to join the "LaRena Smith Bengoa Run, Ride or Walk for the Cure."

The night before the big race, though, organizers will host a benefit concert to kick off the cancer weekend - a concert they hope will further fill coffers meant to help support local cancer victims.

"Adrian" will perform in the back room at The Martin Hotel at 7 p.m. Friday, May 11. Tickets are $15 each and are on sale at The Martin Hotel, OK Tire, Northern Nevada Eyecare and Lander Physical Therapy.

The 20-year-old singer/songwriter and college student lives on a ranch in northern California. She says her songs come straight from the pages of her life where she daily rubs shoulders with tough horses, cattle, weather and cowboys.

Western Horseman Magazine has called Adrian the "buckaroo's Taylor Swift" and chose her song, "The Will James Days," from her first CD "Highway 80," as one of the "13 Best Western Songs of All Times."

Also from "Highway 80," her songs "Old Time Vaquero" and "Praise Him for the Pequaps," have found their way into Western videos this year.

Adrian's second CD, "Boots and Pearls," was produced by Tom Russell, who said in The Cowboy Way Magazine: "I heard the clear potential. I was impressed that she has such a great voice and was so at ease on stage. Adrian is the breath of strong fresh air that the cowboy music scene needs. I was honored to have worked with her."

The title cut from "Boots and Pearls" has spawned a nationwide tide of theme weddings from women who identify with Adrian's ability to be a feminine, but working cowgirl.

Adrian's third CD "BuckarooGirl" was released in January 2012. Ranch and Reata Magazine said, "Adrian's new CD 'BuckarooGirl' is a gift to all of us who enjoy real Western music. She is, in fact, the real deal."

Additionally, the January 2012 issue of Cowboys and Indians Magazine listed Adrian in their "Next West" highlights as one of the "20 bright young stars of the Western world."

Adrian says her goal is to take her fans to new heights through her emotion-filled lyrics and music. She wants to be both critically and popularly acclaimed, and she is attempting to do both by reaching into listeners' souls through her non-traditional genres. Is it folk, country, rock, western, cowboy?

"No, it's all of these and much more," she said. "It's music people love and feel deeply, making it their own as soon as they hear it."

Organizers promise a memorable evening performance, but they also hope concert-goers will realize how helpful their ticket purchase is to those in need.

"Every little bit of money helps," said Mary Maher Bengoa, who co-organizes the race along with her mother, Amorita Maher. "Each dollar, each donation, means that we can help support someone in our communities who has cancer."

This year's 10th annual race will begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at French Ford Middle School; registration and packet pickup will take place from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Participants may choose to run, ride or walk 1-, 3- and 5-mile courses. Bengoa said in the past, some participants have even driven golf carts and horse-drawn carts.

Whatever the mode of transportation, Bengoa said, "This event is all about fun while we create a community of support; all ages and walks of life are welcome."

Registration fees are $25 for adults, $20 for senior citizens and team members and $10 for children under 10. In addition, phantom racers are welcome for $25.
