LOVELOCK - Would you like to be a "Fairy God Sponsor" for PCHS Prom 2013 - "A Cosmic Dream?"
Nevada State Bank and Wells Fargo are featuring a "Fairy God Sponsor" Prom Wishes Tree for local teens in need of a little help to attend the Pershing County High School Junior Prom. Through April 16, donations will be collected at the banks to help local teens.
For small schools, such as PCHS, prom is open for all students to attend, from freshmen to seniors. The junior class is simply the host of this event. Prom is attended by many students going as groups of mixed friends, girls, or guys and as traditional couples.
This is one event that the young men and women get a chance to wear nice clothes and experience an upscale evening. That being said, some stay home because of the perception of it being too expensive.
Similar to the requirements of qualifying for Angel Tree, teens and/or their parents/guardians can pick up an application at the high school office or at the police station. The deadline has been extended to April 12 for families to apply for some assistance.
The donations collected at the bank will be converted into redeemable "Fairy God Sponsor" certificates to local businesses for services and goods, to be used only by the teen. Restaurants such as Sturgeons, La Casita, Temptations, and Cow Poke Café are offering prom dinner specials on the night of prom, April 27, in which they will accept the certificates from young men and women.
Other businesses, such as A Little Something for Tuxedos and Jewelry, Wizards for Flowers, and the Head Hunter for manicures and/or hair, are also participating.
The Class of 2014 has teamed up with Frontier Community Coalition, Coeur Rochester, Domestic Violence, Big R, and Safeway to purchase decorations, food, games, drinks, and DJ to bring the cost to attend to only $15 per person.
The dress attire for attending is from semi-formal to formal, making this very affordable for all students. Although it is nice to go in a tux, young men can simply wear a nice tie with a collar shirt and dress pants to be admitted.
For the young ladies, the Class of 2014 is also hosting a Cinderella's Closet on April 17, where a dress can be borrowed for the evening and then returned Monday, April 29, after prom for future use in the years to come.
Prom or evening dresses can be dropped off at the high school Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. up to April 16. Dresses are coming in by the dozen! Many young ladies are excited to participate, especially our senior girls, whose families are channeling their income for college applications and graduation expenses.
Last but not least, this year the Class of 2014 is hosting a Prom Preview Night on Friday, April 26, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the 4-H building. There will be a light reception for those interested in taking a gander and photos of the prom event décor for admittance of $5 each. "Fairy God Sponsors" and business sponsors will be given complimentary admission.
The theme this year is "A Cosmic Dream." As students drive up to the 4-H building, their cars will be valet parked. Upon entering, they check in at the space portal, travel through the wormhole to arrive at the planetary nebula (dance floor) featuring a revolving dance floor (being constructed by PCHS shop classes).
Then students can make themselves at home on Venus, set up as a lounge with fountains, silk, gossamer and fur accents, blacklight amd L.E.D. up-lighting to set the mood. Once settled, they can wander over to the "Oasis Cantina" (a dome set up in a "Star Wars" theme) and help themselves to the nachos and soda bar, play blackjack or Texas hold 'em, and goof off in the free photo booth. Formal photography with a beautiful cosmic drop background will also be available by Tim Wuth.
Prom on April 27 is an exclusive private event for PCHS students and designated chaperones only. Parents, other district staff members, alumni, and the general public will not be allowed into the event, for both safety reasons and to maintain the event atmosphere.
