RENO - The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) is once again offering its "Grow Your Own!" classes to help you get on the path to sustainable, local, healthy living.

Beginning in July, UNCE offices in Battle Mountain, Carson City, Elko, Eureka, Fallon, Gardnerville, Hawthorne, Lovelock, Owyhee, Pahrump, Reno, Tonopah, Winnemucca and Yerington will return with the ever-popular "Grow Your Own" series, providing gardeners and health buffs in the Silver State with a "back-to-the-basics guide to great harvests in Nevada."

Classes will be held on Monday afternoons from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and in Winnemucca will be at the Humboldt County Extension Office, 1085 Fairgrounds Road.

"Anyone can become a better gardener by attending these classes," said Horticulture Specialist Heidi Kratsch. "From the beginner to the advanced gardener, everyone can benefit from a Grow Your Own class."

Extension experts will touch on composting in small places, food safety in school and community gardens, diagnosing what's wrong with plants, urban organic farming, native plants for pollinators and garden design and function.

• July 15 - Composting in Small Places.

• July 22 - Reducing Food Safety Risks in School and Community Gardens.

• July 29 - Kids in the Garden.

• Aug. 5 - What's Wrong With My Plant?

• Aug. 12 - Urban Organic Farming.

• Aug. 19 - Native Plants for Garden Pollinators.

• Aug. 26 - Garden Design and Function.

To register for any or all of the upcoming "Grow Your Own!" classes in Winnemucca, contact Connie Beck at the Humboldt County Cooperative Extension Office at (775) 623-6304.

Pre-registration is required and early registration is encouraged as class size is limited to the first 14 registered and paid participants for each class.

The class fee for Winnemucca residents is $5 for each class. For those attending four or more classes a USB-flash drive containing gardening resources and handouts is included in the fees.

The USB-flash drive is available for $10 for those taking less than four classes. Class fees in other locations may vary. Those residents wishing to attend elsewhere should contact their local Cooperative Extension office for information on attending the series in those locations.[[In-content Ad]]
