Be ready this summer with help from the Red Cross

WINNEMUCCA - Each summer more than two-thirds of Americans are involved in some kind of summer emergency, ranging from insect bites, heat stroke, broken bones, to more life-threatening situations or disasters such as a wildfire.

This summer you can take a few steps to make sure you are prepared for a summer emergency.

Get a Kit - At a minimum, have a first aid kit available in addition to an emergency preparedness kit with the basic supplies such as water, non-perishable food, flashlight, batteries and a radio. Keep supplies in an easy-to-carry emergency preparedness kit that you can use at home or take with you in case you must evacuate.

Make a Plan - Discuss with your family the types of disasters that happen in your area as well as any medical issues family members might have and what to do case of an emergency.

Be Informed - Take a First Aid/CPR/AED class from your local Red Cross. Also, learn how local authorities will notify you during a disaster. Each home should have at least one person trained in CPR and First Aid.
