BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Twenty teams converged upon the Winnemucca Event Center this past weekend for the annual Cody Louk Invitational Wrestling Tournament.
The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team was included in that large field, along with most of the 4A, 3A, and 2A schools from northern Nevada.
When the whistles stopped blowing, the final team scores saw the Longhorns in fourth place with 165 points. Fernley won the team championship with 223.50 points. North Valleys, from the Northern 4A, was a close second with 216 points. Yerington, the defending 2A state champion, was third at 204.
"We wrestled well this weekend," said BMHS head coach Mitch Domagala. "We're still trying to figure out where we need to move everyone around to give us the best line-up for the end of the season, but we're getting closer."
The Longhorns were well represented in Winnemucca as several wrestlers competed and racked up victories. At 106 pounds, Parker Rochester posted a 1-2 record, while Dillon Thompson was 3-3, finishing in sixth place. Christian Perez racked up a 4-2 record to finish in fifth place at 120 pounds.
Stephen Williams was 1-1 before being injured and having to default out of the tournament. Defending tournament champion Tyler Sparks blew away the competition en route to a 5-0 record and a second consecutive gold medal. Jacob Rochester was 2-2 at 138 pounds, as was George Mayberry in the 145-pound division. Andy Jordan opened a lot of eyes with a great outing, coming home in sixth place in a very tough 152-pound weight class.
Chris Johnson continued his consistent run as he went 5-1 to secure the bronze medal. Tyler Dunlap was 3-2 and came up just short of placing, as did Oscar Chavira with a 2-2 record in the 182-pound division. David Sanchez wrestled well despite giving up a dozen pounds to the competition while taking third-place honors. Winning his second Outstanding Wrestler award in as many tournaments was Tugi Cordova with his championship at 220 pounds. Mike Williams, Alex Gonzalez and Jonas Norman also wrestled for the Longhorns.
"We're working hard to get ready for the end of the season," Domagala said. "We continue to improve each time out, and I think we'll be solid by the end of the year."
The Longhorns are in action today at 3 p.m., as they travel to Lovelock for the Mustang Duals. Right after Christmas they travel to Reno on Wednesday, Dec. 28, and Thursday, Dec. 29, to wrestle in the Sierra Nevada Classic at the Reno Livestock Event Center.
