BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Battle Mountain resident Karen Martin, 50, was transported to Battle Mountain General Hospital with minor injuries following a Nov. 5 accident on I-80 near milemarker 262, which is halfway between Battle Mountain and Elko.

Martin was treated and released, said hospital officials.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, the preliminary investigation indicated that Candace Gittins, 69, of Fort Bragg, Calif., was driving a Honda passenger car eastbound on I-80 in a marked and active construction zone in the left/fast lane.

The right/slow lane was blocked off with orange construction barrels. Gittins failed to slow down for stopped and slowed vehicle traffic ahead, and swerved to the right to avoid colliding with the vehicles, reported the NHP.

The Honda entered the slow blocked travel lane and struck four pedestrian construction workers with A-Core and continued to travel eastbound in the construction zone and hit a parked construction truck.

Gittins was not injured and was wearing her seatbelt. The passenger, Dallas Gittins, 75, also of Fort Bragg, was not injured and was wearing his seatbelt.

One pedestrian worker, Vicki Stenovich, 53, of Spring Creek, died at the scene. The second pedestrian worker, Arthur Lucero, 47, of Gardnerville, was transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno and later died.

The third pedestrian worker, Mario Ramos, 50, of Reno, was transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno and is in stable condition.
