Battle Mountain Schools celebrate Watch D.O.G.S. program

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Students and father figures of Battle Mountain Elementary School, Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School and Battle Mountain Junior High School students are invited to attend the Donuts With Dads event on Feb. 24 from 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. at the Battle Mountain Civic Center.

Donuts With Dads is part of the Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program, an innovative father involvement, educational initiative of the National Center For Fathering. It began in 1998 in a single school in Springdale, Ark., and has since grown into a nationally recognized program that has brought hundreds of thousands of fathers and father figures into the nation's classrooms and hallways.

Watch D.O.G.S. has created millions of "in school" volunteer hours and continues to have a tremendously positive impact on the education process. Today more than 2,276 schools in 41 states plus Washington, D.C., participate in Watch D.O.G.S. Battle Mountain Elementary was the first northern Nevada school to adopt the program in the fall of 2009.

The event is hosted by the Battle Mountain PTA, LCSD Title I Team & the 21st Century After School Program.

Fathers and father figures are invited to sign up to spend one day this year volunteering, serving as a positive male role model and helping increase a sense of security in the building. During their Watch D.O.G.S. day, dads will engage in various activities such as welcoming students during arrival, reading to classes, tutoring small groups of students, having fun at recess or simply sitting down and connecting with students during lunch. They can share about their careers and experiences ... the possibilities are endless!

Program benefits

• Schools gain an extra set of eyes and ears. The presence of Watch D.O.G.S. can increase a sense of security at the building for students and staff, and it helps create an environment conducive to learning.

• Students gain a positive male role model. Some students do not have a father figure present in their home and the number of male teachers has been steadily declining in recent years. More positive male role models are needed in the school setting.

• Fathers and father figures can spend meaningful time with their students in the school setting and gain a greater awareness of the positive impact they can have on their student's life, just by being "dad."

• When Watch D.O.G.S. invest a day at school, they can learn how better to partner with the school to meet educational goals of students.
