Battle Mountain races past North Tahoe, wins second game in a row Itza throws for four touchdowns, 190 yards

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - It was one of those nights when the game was over in the first quarter. The Battle Mountain High School varsity football team scored 28 points in the first 12 minutes of play Friday night at home en route to a 57-6 win over North Tahoe.

The Longhorns (3-1 Northern 2A, 3-2 overall) maintained their third-place spot in the league behind Yerington and Pershing County, who sit at 4-0 and 3-0, respectively.

"We had a second offense and defense set up ready to go," said BMHS head coach Tim Knight. "The starters put four touchdowns up in the first quarter and we started playing our reserves after that."

In just a short amount of time on the field, Daniel Itza had a strong night at quarterback with 10-of-17 passing for 190 yards and four touchdowns. The coach added that there were a number of dropped passes on the night. Jeremy Price came in and replaced Itza during the game.

"It was a chance for everyone to play tonight," Knight said. "We still made some mistakes that we need to clean up. We had a bunch of dropped passes that hit our guys right in the hands."

The Longhorns led 34-6 at halftime and then outscored the Lakers 21-0 in the second half, which included a 66-yard interception return for a touchdown by Allen Enriquez.

Battle Mountain also had a dominating night running the ball, with eight different players having a carry. Ryan Salazar led the Longhorns with 71 yards on five carries. Andy Jordan had four rushes for 42 yards and Jace Ragland averaged 20 yards a carry and rushed for 40. David DeAndreis (26), Jesse Andres (22), Price (14), Kyle Bryant (9) and Jeremy Drown (5) all contributed to the 247 yards of rushing.

Hank Filippini led the Longhorn receivers with four catches for 82 yards. Bryant caught two balls for 60 yards and David DeAndreis had two catches for 27 yards. In all, 12 different players either caught a pass or attempted a rush on the night.

Battle Mountain travels to Whittell on Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff with the Warriors. The Longhorns are then off until Friday, Oct. 14, when they host Yerington at 7 p.m. That game will cap off Homecoming festivities for the week.
